Do you have a clear thesis?
 Does the thesis appear as the last sentence of the introductory paragraph?
 Does the introductory paragraph introduce the issues in an organized way?
 Is every single quote, paraphrase, or summary introduced with signal phrases?
 Do the signal phrases used seem appropriate?
 Are there any places where knowing who the author of a source is would help you as
a reader?
 Does every quotation or paraphrase have proper documentation in the text
according to APA format?
 Is there information in the text that seems like it was taken from a source but hasn’t
been documented yet? (for example, are there numbers or statistics that aren’t
documented? Quotes or paraphrases that don’t have signal phrases?)
 Can you easily find every source in the references page? Have you checked this using
the “side by side” guide https://owl.excelsior.edu/citation-and-documentation/apa-
style/apa-side-by-side/?
 Have you used an appropriate mix of sources?
 Does each paragraph have a topic sentence that tells you what the upcoming
paragraph is about? Is it phrased as something that experts or researchers say?
 Does every paragraph start with a good transition?
 Are there any paragraphs that have a topic sentence about one thing and a body
about another?
 Are there any paragraphs with sentences in them that seem off topic or out of place?
 Are transition words and phrases used within the paragraphs? (for example, then, on
the other hand, since, in fact—see our sample paragraph about Americans being
worried about GMO’s?)
 Are the paragraphs in the best order they can be? As a writer, have you made it clear
to readers why you’re giving the information in this order?
 Does your paper have a conclusion paragraph? Does it sum up the ideas of the paper
without restating the thesis verbatim?
 Does your Works Cited page contain all of the entries for sources you’ve cited? Are
there any works listed there that you haven’t cited (remember only works you cite
are included in the works cited page)
 Is your paper in a 12 pt. Times New Roman font? Is it double-spaced throughout,
including the works cited page?
 On the references page, do the entries follow the pattern of the first line of the entry
being flush with the left margin and all following lines for that entry being set over
like this:
Smith, John. “How to Win Points.” Time Magazine. July 13, 2020. Academic Search
Premier. Doi: 666060699-0.
 Have you proofread the paper carefully for any typos or other kinds of boo-boos?
