Essay #3
Essay #3 will determine what the future holds for Appalachia. Please read the article “A Fading Coal County Bets on Schools” before you begin writing your essay.
You will need to use this source, at least one other source, and responses to your interview questions for your essay. The interview questions are included as an attachment with the assignment guidelines.
The essay question is this:
When the area began to see a decline in certain jobs, did the region fail to transition?
The research question response can be whatever you decide; I do ask, however, that you submit your thesis before you write the essay (I only want to make certain your approach is feasible).
Sample thesis statements:
When long-standing industries such as coal and tobacco began to fade, the region did not transition well into new industries.
Appalachia is using education as a means to transition into the new, more modern job market.
As with all your essays, you will need three main ideas to complete your intro paragraph.
You cannot use websites; avoid opinion pieces; use newspapers and magazines (print or online) or scholarly articles.
Guidelines:
Make certain you put your name on your essay
Use Times New Roman, 12pt font for all essays; double-space your work
Essay length should be 500-550 words; please do not exceed 550 words (this does not include your full citations at the end of the essay)
Use APA formatting for all in-text citations and your works cited entries
Begin with a strong, argumentative thesis; be certain that your topic sentences are argumentative as well
Be formal and academic; do not use words such as I, Me, Our, Us, We, or similar words
Save your essay in Word; attach in Canvas; Adobe PDF files are not permitted
Essay must be submitted to Canvas as Word attachment by 10/17 before 9AM.
