Instructions
For this exercise, you must pretend as if you are writing an essay in which you are analyzing, critiquing, or creating an argument based on some interrelated themes which you have narrowed down from the author’s work which you find insightful and important.
Note that when writing each thesis, in the space following each of the pertinent readings, you must begin each one by stating: “In this essay I argue that…” Or “I assert that” or “I contend that ” or “I claim that…”
Each thesis must consist of at least 3 (and preferably 4 or more sentences). A well-developed thesis must answer HOW and WHY something happens or develops in the text or specific social context. In other words, you must offer your perspective of HOW the author develops the interrelated themes in that text, or HOW a particular interrelation of themes emerges in a particular social context.
You must also express your perspective of WHY the author develops the interrelated themes in that text, or WHY a particular interrelation of themes emerges in a particular social context.
Lastly, you must also state the significance or implications for your assessment or answer WHY should the reader care? Or, So WHAT?
For this exercise, you must create 1 thesis (3 or more sentences) derived from each of these works found in your Writer’s Guide based on the requirements above. To do so, you must read or re-read these works, selecting a topic discussed in the essay, note how that topic relates to interrelated themes, and narrow it down to create a thesis according to the instructions above. When you have completed the exercise, save it as a word document and submit it on Turnitin by the deadline. Do not wait until the last minute to do this exercise. A well crafted thesis is challenging and takes time to articulate sharply.
You must provide 5 examples in total (worth 3 points each) based on the following works. Do not leave blanks.
Grading Criteria
You will receive one point (each) for articulating:
*HOW? (1 point) a particular concept or theme is developed in the text (documentary, essay, film, etc.) or social context (that society). Describe in a brief way your assessment of how the author presents the key themes that you have narrowed down as significant.
*WHY? (1 point) these concepts or interrelated themes are developed in this text or context. Express any contradictions related to the interrelated themes that you have narrowed down and offer your perspective of why certain social, political, or economic challenges related to those issues often go unchallenged or pose limitations to your reader’s understanding of the issue or conceptual problem that you’ve identified. (see pages 51-61 in The Craft of Research).
SO WHAT? (1 point) What are implications for your analysis? Why should the reader care about the conceptual problem that you have narrowed down?
(3 points total per question)
Please note that the goal of this exercise is not for you to simply re-present the author’s thesis to me. You are also not simply providing just an observation from the text, a statement of fact, a list of examples, or a broad generalization. You must create a thesis which takes a stand!
You are creating your own thesis statement which offers your perspective of how the author develops the interrelation of key themes in presented in the text, why these concepts are developed in this text or context in the particular manner the author chooses, and the implications of your analysis or why we as readers should care.
To make it strong, a thesis needs to be the engine of a complex argument. It needs to consider evidence presented in the paper which supports the author’s claims, complications or contradictions presented in the essay, and demonstrate that your stance takes these matters into consideration while reinforcing your perspective and that we as readers should care about the implications of your analysis.
THE EXERCISE
Works (Found in The Course Writer’s Guide): Please write 3-5 (or more) sentences as a thesis for each response). There is not one specific, correct thesis statement possible for each essay. Therefore, I expect that your thesis is yours alone. Do not copy any other student’s response because plagiarism is easy to discern in this exercise through Turnitin. Also, it is important that you make a valid attempt to create a thesis, here, so that you can be prepared to produce a strong thesis statement for your research papers which are due later in the semester.
Submit your responses on this sheet and upload it to Turnitin. Do not leave blanks because you will forfeit any possibility of gaining points for that question if you do so and I am grading this exercise fairly, while generously noting your sincere effort, knowing that you have not created a thesis for college level papers often in your career.
That said, pretend that you are writing a full essay for each of these works below and, of your course, you would be creating a strong introduction in which the thesis would be located at the end of this introduction. Now, offer in the space provided 3-5 (or more) sentences as a thoughtful thesis which is developed in a clear, thoughtful, and systematic manner which meets the criteria noted above, based on the following works found in your Course Writer’s Guide:
