Using the life experience of an individual recorded in a book or movie (biography, autobiography, or fictional) provide a written analysis of the process and outcome of the transformative learning (TL) experience. TL is a learning process making meaning of one’s life experiences. Transformation can be a change that occurs gradually or a sudden, powerful experience. TL can be an exciting, enjoyable experience or a very frightening event.
According to Jack Mezirow (1991) “Transformative learning involves an enhanced level of awareness of the context of one’s beliefs and feelings, a critique of their assumptions and particularly premises, an assessment of alternative perspectives, a decision to negate an old perspective in favor of a new one or to make a synthesis of old and new, an ability to take action based upon the new perspective, and a desire to fit the new perspective into the broader context of one’s life” (p. 161.)
Mezirow, J. (1991). Transformative dimensions of adult learning. Jossey-Bass.
One of the most important aspects of TL is critical reflection which is the ability to reflect on what has been learned and fit the new information into one’s worldview.
Mezirow provides a 10 phase sequence to analyze the process and outcome of the transformation:
A disorienting dilemma – Picture the event
Self-examination of affect (guilt, shame, fear, etc.) – What are you aware of feeling?
Critical Assessment of assumptions – How do you interpret what is happening?
Recognition that one’s discontent and the process of transformation are shared and that others have negotiated a similar change.
Exploration of new roles – When this begins to occur for you or someone else, what will be different about you or the individual reviewing?
Planning a course of action – What are the dangers to change? Do you act on the changes now?
Acquiring knowledge and skills for implementation – What will you need to know/accomplish/overcome for this to occur?
Trying out new roles – How will you know when you are on track?
Develop competence and self-confidence in new roles
Reintegration of new perspective into one’s life
Your Transformative Learning Reflection/Critical Analysis Paper should include the following 3 primary sections:
Introduction
Title of book or film/movie, author/director’s name, and date of publication or release
Outline the main ideas of the book or film
State your own thesis statement and main idea about the work
Analysis (analysis must follow Mezirow’s 10 phase sequence) and also include the following:
Analyze the process of the transformation of the principle character
Explain your analysis with specific examples from the book or film
Analyze the causes and effects or the importance of the events that caused the transformation
In your opinion, was this transformational learning experience positive or negative or both
State the value of the outcome of the transformation
Conclusion
Restate your thesis
Summarize the process of transformation and the value of the process and outcome
Transformation is about change in one’s perspective in the larger social context. As adults learn, they change.
