THE RESEARCH PROJECT QUESTION
What to critically think about:
Things We Lost in the Fire: Stories by Mariana Enriquez and The Route of Ice and Salt by José Luis Zárate are both works of fiction in translation. The texts were originally written in Spanish, Enriquez from Argentina and Zárate from Mexico. Reading the multi-layered, multi-generational stories of Enriquez and the daring, dark, forbidden desire within Zárate’s novella, consider WHY theses modes of story-telling and re-telling are effective in the 21st-century, especially for taboo subjects.
What to answer:
Identifying FOUR socio-cultural taboos* that Enriquez and Zárate collectively confront within their literature, argue why these texts “humanize” the issues chosen, rather than vilify them? Explain and be specific.
For the conclusion, you may want think, does this “humanization” have anything to do that the writers are not from out of the country? Why or why not? After all, don’t forget these are works in translation.
