This week we’re working on introductions. You will read Mary Mebane’s “The Back of the Bus” in The Norton Sampler and form some conclusions about the introduction of Mebane’s essay. You will also write a paragraph describing your own experience in transportation and then respond to a peer’s posted paragraph on his/her paragraph.
Post 1: Answer both sections A & B in your initial post.
After reading Mebane’s story “The Back of the Bus” consider the introduction.
How does the author set historical context In the opening paragraphs? (cite specific example from the story).
How does the author set emotional context In the opening paragraphs? (cite specific example from the story).
“Taking a Ride” Describe a ride you have taken on a bus, train, plane, boat, or other vehicle. Describe the vehicle. What did it look like? Were there other people travelling as well? Describe them..This should be at least one paragraph (5 – 7 sentences)
Post 2: Provide feedback to a classmate’s paragraph on “Taking a Ride”.
Does it effectively describe the scene? Specifically, does the introduction provide a sense of place (where is the story set?)
What is the one thing you found most engaging (strongest in the writing)?
What is the one thing you would like to know more about or did not understand?
You may also note corrections in grammar and style to help your peer.

FORMAT
Post 1: Answer both sections A & B in your initial post.
After reading Mebane’s story “The Back of the Bus”:
1. How does the author set historical context in Paragraph 1? (cite a specific example from the story).
2. How does the author set emotional context in Paragraph 2? (cite a specific example from the story).
“Taking a Ride” In one paragraph (5 – 7 sentences) describe a ride you have taken on a bus, train, plane, boat, or other vehicle. Describe on the vehicle itself and the people who were there with you.
Part A: “The Back of the Bus”
In this paragraph, you will identify the historical context that Mebane describes in the first paragraph. Identify what was going on during that time—what important policies or laws were in place? Include a quote from the first paragraph that you feel is important. Then, describe what emotional context Mebane describes in the second paragraph. How did she feel during this time? Again, include a quote that you feel is important.
Part B: “Taking a Ride”
When I was a teenager, I went on my first motorcycle ride. Rick, my boyfriend, wanted to take me for a ride on his motorcycle, but he couldn’t get it started. Joe, Rick’s older brother, tried to help, but they couldn’t get it started. Joe offered to take me for a nice easy ride on his motorcycle. I didn’t know Joe well, but he was a good friend of my brother’s, so I knew I would be okay. Besides, he was Rick’s brother and had nice to me in the few months Rick and I had dated, so I trusted him to take good care of me. It was approaching dusk on a warm summer night, and it was a beautiful night to be outside. The clouds in the sky were starting to turn pink as I climbed on the red Yamaha behind Joe, and we started off.
Word count for Part B: 148 words
