here are the directions: remember TWO paragraphs only
Ferguson has a theory of national character – including sentiment –
that distinguishes Romans from Carthaginians, for instance, based
upon their economies: since Roman wealth derived from conquest,
Romans had to be warriors essentially, whereas Carthaginians were
not, because their wealth depended upon trade. In the first instance, Rome placed the objects of warfare in front of its citizens so as to
shape their national character (e.g. a triumphal arc), whereas
Carthaginians placed in front of its citizens the communal returns on trade (e.g. a gleaming port). What would be an example of an object placed in our view by the state that helps shape OUR national
character? Cite Ferguson on this topic directly, explain, and then use him to analyze an example in our day.
