Assignment: Write a Division/Classification Essay on the
topic chosen for the Research Proposal assignment (women in the workplace)
For Essay #1, either classify or divide it into its proper
categories.
Thesis statement:
“The growth of women in the workplace has been a complex and challenging process. Even today, women still struggle to continue growing in the workplace. There are two main obstacles women in our society still face to overcome discrimination in the workplace: the glass ceiling and the pay gap difference”
The thesis should help the reader
understand the point of the essay (informing, persuading, or
explaining a process) as well as enable the reader to
understand the reasoning behind your classifications or
divisions. As you develop your essay, you should elaborate
on the classified/divided areas by using the «Show don’t tell’
concept. In other words, after you delineate a category, make
the category come alive; create an image/concept of that category so that your reader can see it in his/her mind’s eye

Purpose (thesis) is clearly stated;
Categories are properly divided/classified;
Basis of classification/division is valid;
Categories do not overlap;
Categories are comprehensive and/or exceptions are
delineated;
Pattern of development follows a logical order;
Conclusion the essay ends with a “punch,
” not
merely a repetition of the intro or body of the essay
Mechanics: The essay contains proper grammar, usage,
punctuation, spelling etc. Sentences are varied. The essay
contains no awkwardly worded sentences and passages.
Format: Proper MLA format is adhered to including
documentation of the attributions.
Length: 500-600 words.
