Research-Based Argumentative Essay with PME
In their groups, students will work together to research one approved current issue or
controversial topic. A list of sample topics is attached. Instructors may adjust this list of
sample topics as they see fit.
Using the group’s collaborative research, each student will produce a clear, convincing final
draft of an argumentative essay on a current issue, to include the following:
A. Formatting
 900-1100 words*
 MLA/APA style in-text citations and works cited/references page. (SLO 5)
 Minimum of 4-5 scholarly sources,* which may be primary or secondary. If
reputable websites are permitted, they must be approved by the instructor.
 Quotations, paraphrase, or summary from sources to support the argument.
 Each student must utilize at least one source provided by another group member.*
 Edited American English.
