So, I need to write an essay stating that I believe
postcolonial literary lens gave me the most insight into my book because
it helped me further understand that native people are still impacted
today just like they were impacted in the past? It gave me a better
understanding why the writer chose the storyline and characters he did. Yes,
you are on the right track. You are analyzing your text through the
post colonial lens which gave you the most insight while reading your
novel. You may take one of the essays you have already written as a
starting point and add on to it to develop it into a 5 paragraph essays
(introduction, 3 body paragraphs, conclusion).
This is my starting point essay but you do not need to use it.
When reading “Moon of the Crusted Snow” from a post-colonial
perspective, the effects of colonization on the Anishinaabe people is
apparent. Ever since the Anishinaabe people’s reserve was connected to
the Hydro grid by the Southern contractors they have started to lose
their culture and way of living. As stated by the main character Evan,
“the tower had stayed up after they left, a new luxury for people who
lived on the reserve” (Rice, 14). This cell tower was only brought in
because “the construction people from the South wanted a good signal
while they built the massive new hydro dam farther north on the bay”
(Rice, 14). Doing this exposed the Anishinaabe people to the western
culture which started their reliance on electricity rather than on their
own land. This is seen when Evan states that “sometimes they would
forget to feed the fire before bed, knowing that if it died down, the
electric heater would kick in” (Rice, 29). This shows that the
Anishinaabe people were once reliant on their land to supply large
amounts of wood to keep them warm in the winter and now the wood is no
longer a huge concern since electrical appliances have replaced that.
Furthermore, having internet access has allowed Anishinaabe people to
connect and communicate with each other without leaving their homes.
Patricia, an Anishinaabe mom, “slams down the black mouse again. What
the hell is wrong with this? I gotta check my email” (Rice, 23). This
quote clearly illustrates how the Anishinaabe people who were once a
face to face society are now becoming less social due to having internet
access that allows them to connect with others in their reserves
without leaving their
homes. In conclusion, thus far, the power
of post-colonialism is clear as the Anishinaabe culture is slowly being
reconfigured to include more of the western culture in their everyday
lives.
