Change is not a one-size-fits-all concept. There are many different approaches to change and each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. Some change strategies work well in some situations but not well in others. The key is finding the right method for your situation or perhaps even a mix of more than one, taking the best of each approach and making it fit your needs.
Initial Post Instructions
Search for a company whose leader used Theory E to drive the changes and another company whose leader used Theory O to drive the changes. Compare and contrast the two companies, including profitability. Which of the two theories would you use to drive the change? Why? Is effective communication more important in one theory than the other? Why or why not?
Use and cite a minimum of three scholarly references beyond the texts used in the course to defend your reasoning.

What insights did your peers share on Theory E and Theory O that will help you better understand and implement these theories?

Companies today have one common significant problem they face. That problem is handling change. The business world continuously evolves and businesses need to be up-to-date with what is going on around them. If they do not do this, companies will more than likely fail.
Theory E and Theory O are the most popular methods used to perform the difficult task of executing change. The option to mix both theories is possible as well.
Many agencies even go for a mix of both.
Theory E is considered to be the difficult approach to bring about change. Layoffs, downsizing, consolidation, and economic incentives is what this theory revolves around. Typically, when Theory E is applied to a business, shareholders see this as the company succeeding. Examples of businesses that have used Theory E to drive improvements include: General Dynamics applied this approach to optimize economic benefit. Once General Dynamics was privatized, this consolidation strategy was used by British Telecom.
Theory O is considered the softer approach to bring change upon the company. Human capacity and growth on organizational culture is the main focus of this theory. Engagement, feedback, actions, employee attitude, and organizational learning are the strong suites of this theory. To measure an organization’s efficiency, the organization’s capacity must benefit from their experience. Examples of companies that used Theory O to drive the changes are Hewlett-Packard and Richard Branson’s Virgin.
Profitability was gained for General Dynamics because they based their approach on economic incentives by going through both company’s performance statements.
Hewlett-Packard was brought to desired revenues later on, but did not initially gain revenue focusing on organizational capabilities in the beginning of their business start up.
The managerial approach is applied by Theory E while Theory O applies complete involvement and consultations are needed. Theory E is a top-down communication style, while Theory O is bottom-up communication style.
When any type of transition happens, or changes are being made, I would choose Theory O. I would use Theory O within my organization because, I can almost bet my life that the employees will stop suffering, want to care more for their patients, and improve the organizations capabilities over all. The VA would have to make some big investments to improve the VA system, but in the long run the VA will have a lot more loyalty from its employees and maintain sustainability.
Communication is essentially what is needed for both theories to be successful. I think communication could either make or break a company, regardless of the size of the company. Communication is significant when trying to attempt a change.

Good afternoon class,
Many companies must use Theory E to drive the change which will create rapid entrepreneurial growth. A company like Amazon must manage change by downsizing, restructuring, and change the corporate culture. “Amazon has cut several jobs in the Seattle area, a rare lay off that appears to fall predominantly on its established consumer retail businesses.” (htt3) Something odd Amazon is hiring aggressively in other areas. Managers in Asian and European businesses are more likely to adopt an O strategy to change because they have a high value on employee commitment. A company that uses the O theory is Hewlett-Packard. I think I would use theory E to enforce change it would be more profitable. Amazon profit is $ 207.214B and Hewlett-Packard is $ 9.493 Billion. One cannot compare price of Amazon to Hewlett because they only sell a few products and Amazon sells billions of products
