In Chapter 20, the jury hears Atticus’ closing argument speech– his final, powerful remarks which are a plea for the twelve jurors to find Tom Robinson NOT GUILTY. Re-read that speech. Because Scout is not in the courtroom to hear Mr. Gilmer’s final statement, readers do not learn the content of his closing argument speech.
Pretend that YOU are Mr. Gilmer, the prosecuting attorney. Write the closing argument speech that you would give to convince the jury to find Tom Robinson guilty. You are writing from a first person point-of-view, so you ARE Mr. Gilmer. (Note: I know that what you write is not an indication of your own personal feelings! You are pretending to be a character).
Write the closing argument speech as if you were Mr. Gilmer in Maycomb, Alabama in 1935. Stay “true” to the character of Mr. Gilmer, and try to make his words as powerfully convincing as those of Atticus. Remember he is the prosecutor, so use textual evidence from the novel to help prove to the jury that Tom is guilty (for example, point out that if Tom was able to chop up the chiffarobe, he is strong enough to attack Mayella…).
Requirements:
*1-2 pages in length, typed, double-spaced, 12 point font (Times New Roman)
*MLA heading and last name/page number
*Written in the first person point-of-view (use “I”, “me”, “my”)
*Use textual evidence (information/quotes) from the novel
*Edit your writing for spelling and grammar
Write the closing argument speech as if you were mr. gilmer in maycomb, alabama in 1935.
