There will be reflective synthesis reading logs due on specified dates. Keep in mind that synthesis is not a summary of the readings. Instead, a synthesis is “process akin to working a jigsaw puzzle. In the same way we manipulate hundreds of puzzle pieces to form a new picture …we arrange multiple fragments of information until we see a pattern emerge” (Harvey & Goudvis, 2017, p. 212). What is that new pattern emerging from the readings aligned to concepts of language, literacy, and culture in ESL? “Sometimes when we synthesize, we add to our store of knowledge and reinforce what we already know. Other times we merge information with existing knowledge to understand a new perspective, a new line of thinking, or even an original idea” (Harvey & Goudvis, 2017, p. 212). In addition, establish these connections to relevant previous knowledge/readings/experience. For example, you may discuss possible applications to a teaching setting, how these readings may challenge previously held assumptions or confirm them, and/or questions that have resulted from these readings that you wish to explore further.
