. First, you will choose two newspaper and scholarly journal articles that
share a common subject (please choose recently published articles). Your articles must have a
clear author(s) and be published in a credible newspaper or journal. Second, you will offer
a summary for each piece, identifying the audience, purpose for writing, and claims for each
writer. Third, you will analyze the rhetorical appeals that each writer uses to support their
argument. Lastly, you will evaluate the ideas: which writer better satisfies their
readers? Which writer crafts the more fitting response based on the rhetorical appeals used?
In sum, then, the main goals for Essay Three are:
1. Identify the purposes and claims that the two writers make about a significant issue.
2. Locate the arguments in a rhetorical situation (to whom are they writing? When and where
was the article published?
3. Analyze the appeals (logical, ethical, emotional) put forth by the writers.
4. Evaluate the arguments. Which argument is more fitting? Which writers better satisfy
readers? (Your evaluation need not be either/or: maybe one author is more effective logically,
for instance, while the second author is more effective ethically and emotionally.)
Note: if you wish to take a creative approach to this assignment, one of your sources can be a
documentary, commercial, song, music video, spoken word clip, or image.
