Your main purpose in this assignment is to create a coherent, fully-developed, logically-organized argument in response to a debatable issue. The issue you choose can be based on our class discussions, one of the readings we’ve done for class, or one of the argumentative essays in our textbook (with approval from Dr. Beggs). This will require you to be aware of and discuss the rhetorical situation of the essay you choose to respond to, as well as the most likely counterarguments, questions, and/or objections your readers might pose. The essay requires the ability to effectively summarize the issue briefly, maintain an appropriate tone, and use your own critical thinking to organize an argument that is explicitly supported and thoroughly developed with relevant evidence.
STEP 1: Choose the issue or reading
STEP 2: Consider the main ideas, audience, and existing evidence
STEP 3: Brainstorm to determine what your position is and what your supporting claims (reasons) are
STEP 4: Support your position with examples, evidence, statistics, and/or experience, and develop fully. Quotes and paraphrasing is necessary and should be well synthesized with your own writing.
STEP 5: What about the other side? You are required to explicitly address the objections, questions, or counter- arguments of your readers, and then respond to them successfully.
