Personal argument (10% of course grade) In about 500 words (2-3 pages), write an essay based on a personal experience OR personal observation that can be used to illustrate a need for societal change or changes on a social issue. (Consider “I.R.,” Gates, Castro, Kingsolver, Appiah, Didion, and Graff as style and content examples.) Make your argument by using inference, without directly stating your position by focusing on a personal experience or observations as evidence. Use descriptive details to present your specific experience or observation. The primary appeal should be emotional / pathos. And the only supporting evidence is your description of your experience. The purpose, largely, is to practice writing a narrative descriptively and maintaining focus on a single experience which implies a call for social change. Follow the guidelines for “The Writing Process” in chapters 1-8 of LBH. Your audience is your classmates, as students may volunteer to present their essays in class. May be revised and resubmitted for potentially higher grade.
