Do you think these strategies are effective?

Identify two sets of parents that you know, either from your family or from the community, where one set of parents has a child with a disability and the other has typical children with no disabilities. Interview each family separately. Use the questions below with the parents to get started and then add some questions of your own that you think are important to give you a more detailed picture:
How many children do you have – # boys, #girls and their ages? If one or more of the children have disabilities, please explain how they are diagnosed and where among the sidings this child or children fall.

If you have a child with a disability, do the things you enjoy or find most challenging the same or different from your feelings about your non special needs children? If you do not have a special needs child but find one of your children needs more of your attention, explain what you do that may be different?
What kinds of discipline strategies do you employ at home? Do you think these strategies are effective? If you have a child with special needs, are these strategies different from those you employ with your typical children?
What kinds of interactions do you typically have with your children’s teachers? What are your thoughts about homework assignments given – do you find them appropriate or very frustrating for your children? If you have a child with a disability, how do you view school assignments – are they appropriate or very frustrating for your child?
If you could tell each of your children’s teachers one thing that they might do differently, what would that be and why?
After gathering this information, please write up each interview separately and then discuss them comparatively. Highlight differences in parenting, discipline, etc. between the two sets of parents and how having a child with a disability may impact family life. Discuss how these families view school, teachers and what changes they would like to see in school.
After completing this analysis, please add your reflection on what you learned as a consequence of doing this assignment- what should teachers be mindful of when interacting with parents?
