Be well-constructed, argued, and supported (180 points)
● Effectively contextualize its topic in the introduction; topic is relevant to one of the assignment prompts or has
been approved by the instructor.
● Establish a clear, strong, and arguable thesis located at the end of the introduction paragraph.
● Begin body paragraphs with claims that support the thesis statement and that are supported by
quotes/researched evidence and the author’s persuasive interpretation of that evidence.
● Include a conclusion paragraph that summarizes main ideas and reinforces the importance of the topic/thesis.
● Identify and refute counterarguments in effective and substantial ways.
● Include a descriptive title that effectively previews the content and/or tone of the paper.
● Use at least 5 sources (3 of which must be academic sources), incorporated responsibly.
● Author uses research as a way to advance own ideas/argument and move the conversation forward.
Be clear (90 points)
● Use formal (not conversational) and concise language throughout the essay.
● Successfully provide transitions between fully developed ideas.
● Employ specific words and strong verbs to convey meaning accurately.
● Structure of essay and within paragraphs is logically organized with a smooth and cohesive flow
of information.

Follow conventions (30 points)
● Format your paper according to MLA style
○ In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, list your name, your instructor’s name, the course, and
the date.
○ Double space the whole document.
○ Indent the first line of every paragraph.
○ Put your last name and page number in the top right of the header.
○ Times New Roman font style, 12 pt. font, 1-inch margins
● Use correct MLA format for in-text citations and Works Cited Page.
● Essays should be 7-10 pages long (not including Works Cited)
