Your writing must follow each of the rules below. Although
I encourage you to experiment with style, let the grammars
of Standard American English in conversation and formal
writing be your guides. Neither your choice of style nor your
intent to leave your work open to interpretation may excuse
incoherence or syntactical errors. Upload your work as a MS
Word document or PDF file to the folder that bears the same
name as this unit.
Rules
1 Combining and expanding the work that you have
produced for the assignments named “The Hero”,
“Plot” and “Setting”, finish your first story.
2 Narrative is writing that tells a story that has a
beginning, middle and end. The beginning has an
effect but no cause. The end has a cause but no
effect. The middle has both a cause and effect. Plot
is the order in which the story is told and can arrange
beginning, middle and end in any order. Whatever
order you choose, your narrative must tell a
complete story.
3 You must use the original hero whom you created
for “The Hero”, the plot structure that you outlined
for “Plot” and the setting that you described for
“Setting”. If I required you to make any changes to
your previously submitted writing, I will have told
you by now.
4 You may (and should) add new material to what you
have already produced, as long as that material
remains original. Again, no fan fiction will be
accepted.
5 You may narrate your story from any point of view
(POV) and use any tense.
6 Your story must include at least 600 words or it will
automatically receive a score of 0 points. There is no
maximum number of words.
7 Your story must include a title.
8 Your story may include any number of characters,
but it must portray an original hero (a hero is also
known as a protagonist) whose life changes in a big
way. For more information about your hero, see the
previous rules.
9 Accompanying the hero’s change, the hero must
have some major realization.
10 Your narrative must use all five senses to describe
the setting, but there is no need to use all the
descriptions that you wrote for “Setting”.
Scoring
This sequential creative writing assignment is worth 8 points
and you may not earn credit for any subsequent creative
writing assignment until you complete this one, even if you
must complete it after the due date. However, although I will
accept your submission after the due date, you will not earn
back any points that you have lost. I can give the prior assignment
to you for reference .
