Annotated Bibliography 100 pts
At a MINIMUM, your annotated bibliography must include the 5 required resources for your paper. These are:
1 source from CQ Researcher
2 sources from periodicals–magazines, journals, or newspapers, obtained from print, an online version of a source, or through PCC library’s electronic databases
1 source that originally came from a book—Opposing Viewpoints database is great for these
1 relevant web site
If you have already found additional resources that you are planning on using in your paper, by all means include them on your annotated bibliography. To maximize your point-earning potential you must make sure that you have included AT LEAST your required resources.
Your next step in the building of your research project is the preparation of an annotated bibliography. The annotated bibliography is one of the more useful tools in conducting and preparing to present research. An annotated bibliography combines the citations found on the Works Cited list at the end of your research paper with annotations about each of the sources.
For this assignment, you will construct an annotated bibliography based upon the sources that you will be using for your research paper.
Purpose: An annotated bibliography is an organizing tool that is helpful when working on a research project. An effective annotated bibliography is used to compile research sources in one location and provide the researcher with quick access to the information contained in each source.
Annotations vs. Abstracts
Abstracts are the descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly journal articles or in subscription databases. Annotations, on the other hand, are descriptive and critical; they discuss the author’s point of view, clarity, appropriateness of expression, authority, and how you will work this source into your project.
IMPORTANT: Credit will not be given for descriptive/evaluative information copied from another source. In other words, if you find a book review and copy this review to serve as your annotation, you will not receive credit. This is plagiarism, and your instructor will follow the guidelines indicated in your syllabus for plagiarism. Your citations MUST be in MLA format to earn credit.
Audience: This assignment should be directed toward your peers in this course, and you may assume that they have only a casual familiarity with your topic or issue.
Content/Subject: Your annotated bibliography will consist of the sources that you have deemed relevant to completion of your research paper. While you may have no doubt encountered many sources that are not relevant or do not fit the scope of your project, for the purposes of this assignment, you will include only those sources that you find useful, relevant, and that you are planning on integrating into your research paper.
How To Complete this Assignment:
Cite the source in proper MLA format. The citations should be organized in alphabetical order by author just as on an MLA Works Cited page.
Begin your annotation by summarizing the source using at least three sentences. Do not copy and paste the abstract. With the exception of the quotes that you choose, see #4 below, the entire annotation should be in your own words.
In 2-6 sentences, explain the source’s relevance and importance to your paper.
4. Type up any material that you plan on quoting from your source, include your
parenthetical citation. Frequently, we want to quote material that our sources’
authors are quoting from a source that they read! This is called an indirect
source. Indirect sources are cited using “qtd. in” at the beginning of the parenthetical citation (qtd. in Jones).
Keep in Mind: Your citations must adhere to MLA format. This will be one of the central components of the grade for this assignment. Failure to follow MLA format exactly will harm your grade.
The annotations for each source should follow an academic style. This means that you must construct grammatically correct sentences that effectively summarize what each source has to say. Additionally, you should explain how each source is relevant to the issue that you have selected and what it adds to your knowledge about your issue.
Specific guidelines to follow when completing this assignment are:
Use your five required resources plus any additional sources you plan to use
Sources focused around your thesis statement
Adherence to MLA format for all citations.
Sources in alphabetical order according to author / first word of bibliographic citation
Thoughtful and complete annotations of 100-150 words.
Correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling
