For this assignment, you will watch Luis Moll describe Funds of Knowledge’s concept. Funds of Knowledge are the essential cultural practices and bodies of knowledge embedded in the daily practices and routines of families. Moll and associates believe that the best approach to education is to use teaching strategies that draw upon students’ individual knowledge and skills based on what capital they have from their households. Using this technique and knowledge of the students’ background, he encourages teachers to organize classroom instruction to tailor to a more diverse demographic.
As an educator, I believe the practice of multicultural diversity, cultural practices, and bodies of knowledge is motivated by our love for God and, therefore, my love for other human beings. Since God is the Father and Creator of all, his love rests upon all, even upon those who reject him. He, therefore, calls Christians and Christian communities to imitate his love in classrooms, schools, on the job, and everywhere you go; its a worldwide embrace.
As you reflect upon this assignment, I want you to have an open mind about the needs of the students you are serving. Your life may be the only true model they see to demonstrate what Godly cultural practices look like in the classroom. Often, the students are unable to communicate their needs with words. However, as their teacher, you have a frontline view to identifying the students’ needs through actions and behaviors in the classroom. As you watch the video on Funds of Knowledge, I want you to be mindful of Proverbs 18:15, which says the mind of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. Be open to the new applications being shown to you and think to yourself, “how can I model and apply this new knowledge in the classroom in a way that will represent God and influence students for a lifetime.
