Once you have read the passage the goal of this essay is to reflect on the three worlds of the text.
Explain the historical context of the passage. For this you will need to use the textbook. Cite any information taken from the textbook. Place the prophet in context. Where is he? Who is he speaking to? At what point in Israel or Judah’s history is this? Comment on anything else that stands out to you regarding the context of the prophet. If you use any other sources for this, cite your source(s).
Analyze the literary nature of the passage. Be sure to note the context of the passage within the book if that is important. What is the literary form of the passage? Comment on any literary features that stand out to you. What is the content of the passage? Note any literary features or images that stand out to you. How is the prophet communicating the message?
Contemporary meaning. What theological or religious meaning do you take from this passage? Is what you get from it consistent with what the prophet told the original audience for the passage? Is it important to remember the original context when we use it for ourselves?
For a good essay – tie these together with a good introduction (explaining the purpose of the essay) and conclusion.
