Activity
1
Description: Children will make their own Mooncakes with Play-Doh.
1. What do you want children to learn from the activity?
In this activity I want children to learn how to use art supplies like, Play-Doh, cookie cutters, a rolling pin, and molds to make mooncakes. They will learn some shapes with the cookie cutters and colors with the Play-Doh. The children will learn how to describe what they made and what tools they used. They will learn how to communicate with others by requesting more Play-Doh or a different cookie cutter.
2. What Preschool Learning Foundations-Domain, Strand, Substrand, Foundation?
Domain: Visual and Performing Arts
Strand: Visual Art
Substrand: 1.0 Notice, Respond, and Engage
Foundation: 1.2 Create marks with crayons, paints, and chalk and then identify them; mold and build with dough and clay and then identify them.
Domain: Language and Literacy
Strand: Listening and Speaking
Substrand: 1.0 Language Use and Conventions
Foundation: 1.1 Use language to communicate with others in familiar social situations for a variety of basic purposes, including describing, requesting, commenting, acknowledging, greeting, and rejecting.
3. Teaching Strategies:
• Acknowledge and Describe: “I see that you are using the pink Play-Doh.” “Look at the star you made.”
• Coach: “You can use the rolling pin to make the Play-Doh smoother.” “Press the mold softly on the Play-Doh so the imprint can be seen more clearly.”
• Extend: “What other desserts can you make with Play-Doh?” “What do you think would happen if you mix two different colors of Play-Doh?”
• Demonstrate: I will demonstrate how to use a rolling pin. Also, how to use the molds so that children can imprint the design on the Play-Doh.
• Give Information: “Mooncakes are made in China during the Mid-Autumns Festival.” “The festival is about being thankful for the moon.”
4. 3 Vocabulary Words Highlighted: Define Terms
*Mooncake: A small cake that can be a circle or a square.
*Mold: A tool used to make designs on cookies and cakes.
*Imprint: To make a mark by pressing on a surface.
5. Materials: (Small Group-8 children-indoors)
-16 4oz cans of Play-Doh in different colors
-8 Rolling pins
-Cookie cutters (4 circles and 4 squares)
-8 molds
-8 pictures of mooncakes
6. How will I set up and organize the materials for maximum efficiency and effectiveness?
The children will be sharing the Play-Doh, molds, and cookie cutters so all these will be placed on the center of the table for the children to grab. Each child will get their own rolling pin so a rolling pin will be placed in front of them. The materials will be ready on the table before the children get there. I will also have pictures of mooncakes around the table for them to look at.
7. Procedure: How will I introduce this activity to the children? (Connect to children’s prior learning or experience)
After reading A Big Mooncake for Little Star, I will introduce the activity to children by telling them that just like Little Star and her mom, we will use Play-Doh to make our own mooncakes. I will show them pictures of different mooncakes so they can see what actual mooncakes look like. I will explain what the tools are and how to use them. I will tell them that they will be sharing the cookie cutters, molds and Play-Doh, but will have their own rolling pin.
8. How will I involve the children?
I will involve the children by having them choose the first color of Play-Doh they want to use. I will also have an open conversation by providing answers to their questions and asking them questions. Children will be involved by creating their own mooncakes as well as being able to make other desserts and then talking about it.
9. What open-ended questions to ask to increase learning experience?
*What else can you use as a mold to imprint on the Play-Doh?
*What is your favorite dessert?
*What is something you and your family celebrate?
10. How will you accommodate the activity for diverse learners….delays, typical, extension, and ELL?
The way I can accommodate this activity for Spanish only speakers is by labeling the Play-Doh in both English and Spanish. Also, as a Spanish speaker I will be able to translate.
Assignment: . Create a lesson plan and corresponding video activity on the learning domain and strand you signed up for.
2. Create the lesson plan and video based on a quality children’s book of your choice. Here is some guidance on finding quality https://www.adl.org/education/resources/tools-and-strategies/assessing-childrens-literature
To find quality children’s books, look at awards lists. Every year, the American Library Association https://www.barnesandnoble.com/b/books/kids-book-awards/caldecott-medal/_/N-29Z8q8Z1s5v. and other national organizations pore over new titles and choose their favorites for awards. Google quality bookLinks to an external site.s such as Caldecott Medal, Coretta Scott King Book Awards, and Pura Belpré Award. Email me or ask me for a recommendation if you are unsure about the book.
3. Important- Record the lesson plan as though you were actually teaching it to children. Role play- ask questions, pause, use intentional teaching strategies, etc. Do not describe or discuss your activity; actually present it to children, stuffed animals, your children, siblings, etc. You must use teaching materials, visuals, and art supplies to demonstrate your teaching skills- this competency must be demonstrated in this course.
4. for your peers to provide feedback. We will review the videos every week when we review each domain for the remainder of the course. You can share the link to the video from canvas studio ( create it in canvas studio and then share the link and copy the link and paste it at the top of your lesson plan assignment)
5. Do not read the whole book- you can read or play a page or two, but it should be a video of you teaching for approximately 10 mins.
6. We will watch these videos and give feedback when we cover each domain.
