Improving Reading Strategies
Employing strategies to increase engagement in reading materials for school, work, or pleasure can enhance reading comprehension. In this discussion, explore the best techniques you use for reading difficult materials.
How do you engage in content – a text – that is challenging?
How do your reading strategies compare to strategies you use when watching a movie or television, or surfing the Web?
Sample Student response: Approx. 150-200 words
I’d say reading can be engaging when you use a few strategies to make it an active process. Watching a movie or TV is pretty much a passive activity—I wouldn’t say you could plan for it the way you can for reading. Surfing the Web is interactive, but to some extent, your path is chosen by whoever posts the website on the Internet. The strategies that I use are: previewing materials (now I do a “textbook reconnaissance”), highlighting keywords, underlining definitions of keywords, and creating Q-cards. I’d bet some of these reading strategies would help when surfing the Web. However, these strategies are a huge assett with my academic classes. The strategies enable me to read more material faster, and I can understand what I have read better. The Q-cards help me review the material and improve my online notes, so this eventually helps me be better prepared for an exam or a meeting where I need to recall the information that I previously read.
