Instructions for Essay 2:
You should write an essay developing one of the six themes in the play, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark written by William Shakespeare. Since each theme can be applied to multiple characters in the play, your thesis will need to focus on showing how one character develops through his/her struggle with that one theme. We know from the Heller article, “Meaning and Suffering” that we are transformed through our struggles. We can choose to retain our humanity and transcend our circumstances, or we can give in to our lower impulses to control and destroy others by any means necessary. We see both in this play. The differences are very subtle, however.
You will need to choose a theme from this list:
Loyalty
Obedience
Trust/Doubt
Revenge
Immorality
Appearance versus Reality
Then choose a character who struggles with that theme:
Hamlet
Ophelia
Laertes
Gertrude
Claudius
