I would like a Visual Rhetoric/Argument essay on the charity Operation Underground Railroad. I think they are doing a really great thing.
This is the class assignment instructions:
A charity you feel strongly about and write a thoughtful, clear, reasoned argument to support your assertion that we should support this charity or we should not and why. This paper should be at least 1,500 words and include a work cited page of at least 4 outside sources. Make sure your paper does the following:
1. Introduces the topic (the charity of your choice)
2. Offers necessary background/context
3. Presents a debatable claim (thesis)–we should or should not support this charity–papers that offer a positive evaluation still should include a few areas that could be improved. Papers that offer a negative evaluation should include a few areas that are well done in the charity.
4. Uses at least three outside sources for this paper (up-to-date and credible) and at least one image (total of 4 sources at min)–These could be newspaper articles about the group or an interview or data or anything you find about the group that is credible, up-to-date and helps your argument
5. Offers examples of ethos, pathos, and logos the charity uses to “sell” its ideas (at least one example of each in your paper). Don’t define the terms, but do use the words.
6. Integrates an image from your charity and at least 200 words of discussion of that image (this would just be one section of the total 1500 words for the paper) as visual rhetoric. Here are some questions you could address in this part of your paper:
–How would you describe the images?
–What is the argument/message of the images? Do they vary or are they all similar in message? How so?
–How are the images persuasive?
–How would the audience for these images know these are supporting an argument/message? Is it possible the audience wouldn’t necessarily know these are meant to be persuasive?
–What do you have to know about the charity to understand the images?
–Are the images using the rhetorical appeals of logos, pathos, ethos? More of one than the other? Examples? -For example, “This image is clearly using pathos as it focuses on a sad and lonely puppy in a shelter. The charity is attempting to convince people that these puppies need immediate help.”
7. Includes if appropriate another group that is doing a better job that you might encourage readers to consider
8. Presents a correctly formatted works cited page and correctly formatted in-text citations (MLA)
A note on visual rhetoric: Often an image can be used to persuade an audience. This is called visual rhetoric. Visual rhetoric asks us as the viewer to analyze what we see in the images that help make a statement or an argument. Elements like color, position of people/animals/objects, the gaze from the person being photographed or drawn, the “story” in the image, the clothing, the light, etc. All work to engage the reader.
What I would like you to do for Essay #2 is to include an image or several images from the charity you are evaluating. These images could be pictures/graphs/drawings/anything visual the charity uses in its information, on its website, or in commercials. Include an image or images from the charity, and then include in your paper a visual analysis of these images as rhetoric (a way to persuade the reader to give to the charity). Work this into your analysis rather than “adding” it as a separate section. The image can be included in the paper as you are discussing the image. Make sure you also cite it on the Works Cited page!
Offers examples of ethos, pathos, and logos the charity uses to “sell” its ideas (at least one example of each in your paper).
