Outline Worksheet to Rough Draft:
Step 1: Fresh Document
Copy
and paste your Outline Worksheet into a new Word document in your
Office 365 version of Word. NEVER write over an existing assignment.
Delete the bullet points, sentence labels, and directions so you are just left with your words.
Format into body paragraphs.
Step 2: Format into proper APA
Cover
Page: page number in header; title (bold, extra space after); your
name, college, class my name, due date (all centered and about halfway
down the page; all 12 TNR, double spaced, Before and After both say 0,
box that says “do not add space between paragraphs” is checked
Abstract:
title (bold and centered); abstract should be one paragraph (one
sentence for every section of the paper including intro and conclusion;
yes, include spoilers!); no indent at the beginning; keywords (title
italicized); minimum of three keywords (no italics). Think about the
purpose of the abstract. A student reads it to see if the article is
relevant to their paper; that’s why it’s okay to give spoilers.
Level 1 Headings: bold and centered, word or phrase (not question or sentence)
Tables/Figures: in appropriate sections where you will discuss them; formated according to page 231 of The Little Seagull Handbook (table
title and number in bold, description in italics, both above the table
or figure, note at the bottom in italics, Reference entry).
References page: copied from Pre-Writing 1 Worksheet
Step 3: Flesh out Body Paragraphs
Add
additional sentences of explanation where you think is most
appropriate. Explain every direct quote or paraphrase. You can’t assume
your readers will get out of that what you want them to. Then, explain
how that connects back to your thesis statement. This essay is very much
like our Essay 1 in that you need to break everything down Barney style
and explicitly tell your readers how to get from point A to point B.
Remember, APA doesn’t use topic or transition sentences. That’s what the Level Headings are for.
Make sure to refer to and explain the tables/figures in your actual essay.
Step 4: Intro and Conclusion
Intro:
Add relevant background information (explain keywords here, for
example). No hook needed. APA isn’t about being fancy; get straight to
the point. Thesis should still be the last sentence of the paragraph.
Should still be a paragraph long (5-7 meaty sentences).
Conclusion:
Flesh out your conclusion from the Outline Worksheet. Be more specific
and give more explanation of what research needs to be done in the
future, how it should be done, and why. Remember, this is your “I Say,”
so make it count.
Step 5: Proofread
Proofread
your paper one final time (reading it aloud is the best way to catch
errors). Make sure to check for sentence structure (no fragments or
run-ons), punctuation (correct use of commas), and Mrs. A’s Pet Peeves
(contractions, POV, FANBOYS, well).
