OVERVIEW
Create a 2- to 5-page technical instruction guide covering OneDrive or Google Drive. In your instructions, you should select and identify the computer system (Mac or PC). You will cover the following two tasks:
Downloading and installing the software on a desktop (using the OneDrive Texas State University versionLinks to an external site.) or Google Drive (Links to an external site.)
Uploading a Word document to the cloud drive for storage
In the technical instruction guide, you will specifically target Texas State University Students as the primary audience (presenting the information for their needs).
For each of the two tasks (listed above), you will need to provide stepwise procedures that includes BOTH:
Individual, stepwise verbal instructions in the imperative mood and
Cropped, annotated visuals illustrating each individual task.
Important note: The visuals should cover every step in the procedure and clearly communicate the procedure without any accompanying text. The stepwise visuals part of the assignment are somewhat analogous to an IKEA instruction guide (except for software) and would are critical skill for global technical communication to communicate instructions to non-English speakers.
Your technical instruction guide should reflect only these two tasks, be targeted to your audience (i.e., students at Texas State University), and follow the requirements/lecture guidelines. NOTE: Do not copy content from ITAC or elsewhere online, but rather write your own set of technical instructions.
You can access the software at:
REQUIREMENTS
Follows guidelines as covered in the Modules. The technical instructions must include the following:
Informative Title (that clearly indicates what the instructions cover)
Introduction Section (written in prose in a professional/plain language style)
The subject and purpose of the instructions
The intended audience and skill level
The length of time that the instructions take to complete the task
The scope of document/overview of stages
Equipment and Materials (includes all of the equipment necessary for the audience to accomplish the task)
Body (Stepwise Procedure) (written in the imperative style of stepwise instructions with signal words used properly; includes cropped and annotated original screenshots/illustrations for each step):
Divides a multi-step process into individual actions
Subdivides longer instructions into broader stages (with subtitles)
Provides only one action per step (written in the style covered in the lecture and handouts)
Includes an informative visual with every step: The goal of this part of the “visual communication” assignment is to use images to show every step in the process so that a user could complete the instructions without reading the corresponding text. (This would be like creating an IKEA manual.) The visuals will be integrated below each written step and cropped/annotated (with callouts) as covered in the module. The visuals should be appropriately scaled for the document, with the text of the visuals approximately the same size as the body text of the instructions.
If necessary, uses notes and signal words properly.
Conclusion (written in prose in a professional/plain language style)
Indicates that the instructions are complete–informs the user about what was accomplished
Provides the user with at least one source of troubleshooting information (such as a URL or contact information for a help desk)
