Paper 2 Guidelines: Topic Exploration (SOCIAL MEDIA SURVEILLANCE)
Description
Your task in this assignment is to research a narrow topic related to the theme in unit 2 (surveillance in the public sphere), and discuss your findings for an educated but non-specialist audience.
To prepare, you should:
Define your topic (narrow topic related to surveillance in the public sphere; see list of possible topics here)
Compile a list of relevant and significant scholarly sources (6 total)
One source may come from course materials (Gans and Mann, Foucault, Gray, or Watters)
The other five must be from external sources, three of which must be peer-reviewed, academic sources
Then, you must write an essay that does the following:
Describes each relevant and significant source you’ve found individually.
Discusses important connections among some or all sources.
Incorporates your own, informed critical perspective on this research with your discussion.
Paper 2 Sample Plan
Sample Plan for Paper 2: Topic Exploration of Accessibility in College Classrooms
Thesis/Main Claim: In my thesis, I’ll describe the scope of my topic exploration (what my research says about the topic) and mention the specific themes that will guide my body paragraphs: “Accessibility challenges in college classrooms have received increased attention over the past few decades, particularly as manifesting in physical spaces, digital environments, and external supports like disability services.”
Body Paragraphs:
In my first two body paragraphs, I’m going to discuss two sources related to challenges of accessing physical spaces. This might look like:
I’ll start with a topic sentence framing discussion of accessing physical spaces.
Summary of Source 1, which talks about challenges of actually getting to classrooms in non- or semi-ADA compliant buildings. This might be the end of my first body paragraph, but we’ll see how it flows in the draft.
Segue to Source 2, which talks about the challenges of accessibility for students with mental disabilities. I’ll transition between discussion of source 1 and 2 using “in comparison” and summarize source 2’s main points and evidence here.
Continued synthesis of sources 1 & 2–I see they are bringing up ways in which accessibility challenges arise, and how, together, the spaces impact the learning experience for students with disabilities.
In about the next two body paragraphs, I’m going to discuss my next three sources (3, 4, 5) related to the challenges of accessing digital environments. This might look like:
I’ll start with a topic sentence framing discussion of accessing digital environments.
Summary of Source 3, which talks about challenges of online learning during COVID and compares the accessibility of Google Meet and Zoom. This might be the end of my third body paragraph, but we’ll see how it flows in the draft.
Segue to Source 4, which also talks about the challenges of Zoom learning from the perspective of a college instructor who shares tips on making Zoom more accessible. I’ll transition between discussion of source 3 and 4 using “similarly” and summarize source 3’s main points and evidence here.
Continued synthesis of Sources 3 & 4–I’m noticing both are addressing online learning from different angles and give evidence to how instructors and software corporations are both trying to make these platforms more accessible. This might be the end of my fourth body paragraph, but we’ll see how it flows in the draft.
In about two body paragraphs, I’m going to discuss my final two sources (5 & 6) which are related to the challenges of accessing support services. This might look like:
I’ll start with a topic sentence framing discussion of accessing support services.
Summary of Source 6, which talks about one student’s challenges getting accommodations from DRS. This might be the end of my sixth body paragraph, but we’ll see how it flows in the draft.
Segue to Source 7, which polls both students and disability support staff to discuss the issue. I’ll transition between discussion of source 6 and 7 using “in contrast” and summarize source 7’s main points and evidence here.
Continued synthesis of Sources 6 & 7, contrasting the perspective of the student from Source 6 and the broader view taken in source 7.
In a final body paragraph, I’ll synthesize sources from all three areas, reflecting on the similarities and differences related to challenges in physical spaces, digital spaces and support services.
