This week’s short writing assignment is simple. Write a short critical response to Green Grass, Running Water.
What is a “critical response,” you may ask.
Think of it as a shorter, less formal version of an essay. I’m looking for only a paragraph or two, and there are no citations or sources required, but it should still be analytic and critical, not a personal reflection.
In other words, if you really like Green Grass, Running Water I want to hear about it, but not in this assignment.
Unlike a formal essay you do not need to have a clear thesis, in that you do not need to be arguing for a particular position. You may simply have a question to which you do not have an answer. But the best versions of this assignment will address some issue of analysis (a “why?” question, not a “what?” question), whether they suggest answers or not. You should also strive to be focused, cohesive, and use good grammar and standard English.
The pitfalls I hope you will avoid in this assignment are rambling, stream-of-consciousness writing, and shallow analysis.
