In Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai the samurai represent the concepts of individualism, freedom of expression, and taking accountability for one’s own choices. Each of the samurai stand out for having unique perspectives on what it means to be an honorable person and what it means to be a warrior. Seven Samurai places a strong emphasis on personal development; we can see that someone could make amends for themselves by their actions, especially with Kikuchiyo’s character. When talking about taking accountability in the film we see how Kambei tries to make the other samurai understand how important accountability is, like when Kambei scolds Kikuchiyo for acting selfishly and bringing harm to others.
A significant theme constant throughout the Seven Samurai is how expectations for individuals are based on class or group identity. Despite being raised as a farmer, Kikuchiyo develops his identity in opposition to the social expectations from his birth. The identities of the other samurai are formed in a way that is in contrast to the social and cultural expectations of samurai, mainly by deciding that their own fundamental morality should take precedence over such social or cultural expectations. Kikuchiyo becomes focused with his proof of birth as a source of identity, but as Kikuchiyo learns from the other samurai that he should define himself more by his actions than by the norms of society, he then fits in and acquires the identity he desires.

The movie “Seven Samuri” is known as Japanese biggest movies in history. The movie takes place in the sixteenth centry, right after the Sengoku period of Japanese history. The movie is about a village of desperate farmers who hire seven masterless samurai to combat bandits who will return after the harvest to steal their crops(food). There was a romance in the movie between Samurai Katsushiro and a village girl that caused arguments in the village to understand the younger people and an appeal to have their romance. The movie revealed visual patterns and an instinctive feeling for composition. Kurosawa constantly uses deep focus to follow simultaneous actions in the foreground, middle and background. Kurosawa’s moving camera often avoids cuts in order to make comparisons, as when he will begin on dialogue in a closeup, sweep through a room or a clearing, and end on a closeup of another character who is the point of the dialogue. I thought that part gave a better understanding.
The point of the movie is more about job and the roles. “Seven Samurai” represents Japanese master Akira Kurosawa’s most optimistic inspection of humanity and individuality. The movie had expert editing and innovative camera techniques, which was excellent. The movie was made for all ages and races to be entertained and understand what people go through to achieve and get what they want.
