In her essay “The Age of Anti-Ambition,” Noreen Malone writes that “almost no one I know likes work very much at the moment” (Malone 3). But out of the challenges and negative feelings created by the pandemic, many have begun to think more idealistically. As Malone notes, “some people have reacted to this moment by becoming less cynical about the possibilities of work. The broader world is getting darker — climate change, crumbling democracy. It feels impossible to change it. But work? Work could change” (Malone 7).
Meanwhile, in her essay “Beware of Selling Yoga Pants on Facebook,” Darlena Cunha describes an unfairly structured workplace (where the majority of rewards go to the top, in pyramid fashion), yet the workers are very engaged and feel very positive about the company they represent and about the work they do. She writes that “the sellers I met all said it’s about much more than money. They value the sense of community, friendship, and purpose that comes with being a vendor” (Cunha 4).
