Option 2: Write Your Own Sonnet + Mini-Essay
500 word mini-essay + an original sonnet
APA format
Part 1) For this creative option, you may write your own Shakespearian sonnet. This means a 14 line poem with the following rhyme scheme: abab cdcd efef gg. You do not need to write in iambic pentameter, but you must make the poem rhyme. Sonnets should be about a single theme (like “love” “parenting” or even “hating schoolwork” … choose whatever you like.) Feel free to have fun with it, although check for spelling and grammar errors.
Part 2) Additionally you must write a 500 word “mini-essay” in which you compare your sonnet to another poem that we read in class. What is a poem or we read in class that covers a similar theme or subject? What differences and similarities are there? See the description of comparison essays above. You can think of this as a reading response using your own work as one of the two works discussed.
In this mini-essay you should mention at least 2 poetic terms we’ve gone over in class such as enjambment, alliteration, or metaphor. While this option is partly your own creative work, it should still be proofread carefully and formatted in APA.
