You are writing a literary analysis of “Battle Royal” showing us how the story makes an argument about racism’s effects on communities and individuals or how it illustrates institutional/systematic racism at work. Successful essays will have a developed introduction (background information, terms, summary of the story you’re analyzing, and a thesis statement about what the story teaches us about racism or how the story confronts the power dynamics). The body paragraphs will begin with topic statements that make a claim about what specific scenes, images, or word choices illustrate, teach, or signify.
